The British Columbia Ministry of Justice has proclaimed March 31 to April 6 “Make a Will Week” in the province, encouraging everyone to make a will or update wills already prepared. “People who don’t make a will lose the opportunity to choose their beneficiaries,” said Vernon lawyer Rob Culos, President of the Vernon Bar Association.
The Lake Country Heritage and Cultural Society echoes that sentiment. Too often folks pass away without directing survivors on what to do with family photos, journals and business documents. Many important historical records are left at the curb.
Community history is made up of the records of previous generations of community members. The Lake Country Heritage and Cultural Society urges residents to call their local museum to collect their family records and memorabilia or to indicate in their Will their wish to leave these records to the museum. If not a Will, then place a card in that box of photographs informing survivors to contact the museum in the event of their passing.
Museums collect family photograph albums, family bibles, farming and business records, personal correspondence, scrapbooks and books as well as older technology, equipment and household goods.
Please act now. Your descendants will thank you for keeping your records intact.
